Σούνιο - Ναός Ποσειδώνα
Sounion - Temple of Poseidon
Sounio is a rocky cape, the southernmost point of Attica. It was the first place anyone saw sailing from Cyclades or Asia to Piraeus. From there the city-state of Athens controlled the sea passage to Aegean and Piraeus, its main port, as well as the Lavreotiki peninsula, with its rich silver mines, thanks to which it became a superpower in the 5 th century BC. Sounio is known for its important geographical location but also for the ruins of the ancient Temple of Poseidon that are in it. In recent years, in 1974, the wider area due to its environmental value, was declared a National park. Sounio is essentially a very energetic place that can give everyone something special.
In the area where today are the ruins of Poseidon Temple, during Archaic time there was an alter dedicated to God surrounded by two large Kouros. Watching the sunset from Sounio will be unforgettable.
