Pillars of Olympian Zeus – Hadrian’s Gate
Between Acropolis and Ilissos river we find the remains of the sanctuary of Olympia Zeus (known today as the Pillars of Olympian Zeus) one of the most important and oldest sanctuaries in Athens. It is located southeast of Acropolis and in direct view with it. The Pillars of Olympian Zeus are the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus which was the largest temple of antiquity and was dedicated to Zeus, the king of gods. Today only 16 columns excists.
Hadrian’s Gate
Hadrian’s Gate (or Hadrian’s Arch) is a monument gate that resembles –in some respects- a Roman triumphal arch. It was built in 131-132 AD by Athenians in honor of the emperor Hadrian. It covered an ancient road from the center of Athens, to a complex of settlements on the east side of the city, whish included the Temple of Olympian Zeus. It is one of the most photographed places in the city.
