National Historical Museum
A tour to the permanent exhibition of the National Historical Museum represents the course of Hellenism from the Fall of Constantinople (1453) to the Greek – Italian War of 1940-1941, through paintings and engravings, flags and weapons from the national liberation struggles, personal items of historical figures, documents and photographs, household utensils and tools as well as traditional costumes and works of modern Greek handicrafts.
At the entrance of the museum there are weapons of the Greek Revolution and busts of 19 th century kings and politicians. Through weapons, uniforms and personal items, documents, photographs, as well as experiential and interactive exhibits, contemporary works of art, the exhibition highlights the enormous importance of the first industrial war that began the 20 th century. Byzantine and Christian Museum The Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens is one of the most important public museums in Greece.
It was founded in 1914, and houses more than 25.000 exhibits with rare collections of pictures, manuscripts, and copies of artifacts from the 3 rd century AD to the Middle Ages. The permanent collection of the museum is divided to parts: the first part is dedicated to the Byzantine period (from the 4 th to the 15 th century AD) and contains 1200 exhibits, and in the second part which is titled ‘’From Byzantium to modern times’’ presents 1500 exhibits from the 15 th to the 20 th century.
