Meteora
Meteora is a complex of dark sandstone rocks that rise outside Kalambaka, near the first hills of Pindos and Hassia. The monasteries of Meteora, which are built on the tops of some rocks, are today the second most important monastic complex in Greece after Mount Athos.
Only six, out of thirty, are in operation today and since 1988 are included in the list of UNESCO Word Heritage Sites. They are located at the northwestern border of Thessalian plain and near the southern tip of the Middle Greek Basin, a tectonic depression that extends from Albania to Thessaly.
Meteora today, have the form of steep peaks with height of up to 200 meters and width of up to 300 meters. The average altitude is 313 meters. Inside these rocks is the Theopetra Cave. The six monasteries open to visitors today, are restored, and preserved with the majority of mural decoration.
Metora is a protected habitat of Natura 2000 network. Hiking is the ideal activity to admire all the natural and historical beauty of Meteora. An easy but impressive route for the whole family.
