Isthmus – Ancient Corinth Tour
The Isthmus of Corinth is a narrow strip of land that connects Central Greece with Peloponnese, whilst the canal that has been opened connects the Saronic Gulf with the Gulf of Corinth. It’s length is about 6km long and the narrowest point is where the Corinth canal was built (1880-1893). It was a strategic point and for this reason a wall had been built since ancient times (late 5 th century BC) which had been preserved until the Byzantine Period (Examilion). Drilling work has begun on April 23, 1882. Today, the Corinth Canal is an international shipping hub and serves about 12.000 ships a year of all nationalities.
Ancient Corinth
Ancient Corinth was an important city-state of the ancient Peloponnese. It controlled a key position of Isthmus, an area that corresponded to the east of the present prefecture of Corinth and to the northeast of the prefecture of Argolida and was the most important commercial hub of the ancient world, until it was over rule by Athens. It was built at the foot of Acrocorinth, the rocky hill located southwest of the modern city and inhabited since the Neolithic years (5000 – 3000 BC). The Museum of Ancient Corinth was built in 1932 to host the numerous objects of archaeological discoveries. Today a new exhibition about ancient Corinth is hosted in the museum, covering the period from the geometric years up to its destruction by the Romans, in 146BC.
