Thiseio or Thisio is the name of a traditional neighborhood in downtown Athens, northwesr of Acropolis near the Observatory. Important monuments of Thiseio are the ‘’Thiseio’’ or the ‘’Volcano’’ the temple of Hephaestus which was wrongly considered a temple in the memory of Theseus, from the relief representations of his deeds in the metopes, as well as the Stoa of Attalos, where it has signed the EU enlargement treaty. Today the area is known as a recreation area with many cafes and taverns.
Monastiraki is a district of Athens that took its name from a church at the crossing of Ermou and Athinas streets, while in the area there is a Turkish mosque. The area is known for its many second-hand shops and other shopping stores.
Plaka is the most historic district of Athens that survives till today.
Buildings of Plaka declared protected after the second World War and today there are many shops, taverns, cafes, museums, galleries, and houses of historical Athenian families. There is also Anafiotika, an area built by Anafiot immigrants in Cycladic style. In Monastiraki we find the picturesque Abyssinis Square and its small noisy and bust street full of shops with antiques. In Athina’s and in all the vertical streets, as Evripidou, visitors can find shops full of spices and herbs. Dozens of small shops with all kind of items, are hidden in the neighborhood of Psyrri.
If after all these wanderings, visitor feel the need for food, ‘’souvlaki’’ and kebab in Monastiraki will be an excellent choice. For those who want something healthier, there are many taverns with cooked food and salads, as well as some vegetarian restaurants.
