Ακρόπολη
Herodium
The famous Conservatory of Herodes Atticus, dominates the western end of South Slope of Acropolis. It was built between the years 160 and 174 AC from the rich Herod Atticus, philosopher, and descendant of an old Athenian family. It was used mainly for music events. It was covered
and had a total capacity of 5000 people. The conservatory was destroyed in 267 AC and was never rebuilt such as other ancient buildings that had been destroyed.
Over the years the conservatory joined the fortifications of Athens. The monument was restored in the period 1952-1953 and since 1957 it is used for artistic events (concerts, performances of ancient drama etc). Even today, watching a show at the Herodium under the summer sky of
Athens is one unforgettable experience.
